The Department of Primary Education of the University of Ioannina was established pursuant to the Law 1268/82 and began its operation in 1984, according to the Presidential Decree 320/83. In the academic year 1984-85 the Department accepted the first students.

The duration of the Program of Undergraduate Studies is eight semesters. Τhe Department of Primary Education offers a BSc. The number of students enrolled in the Department every year is approximately 300.

Additionally, the Department of Primary Education offers Masters (MSc) programs and Doctoral (PhD) studies.

The Professional Development Program of the Department of Primary Education operated from 1996 until 2011 (Presidential Decree 354/96, Government Gazette 231/96) and its aim was to provide the personnel of primary education with further training. Further training had two programs, the General one and the Special Needs one, the duration of which was four semesters. Those who completed the Professional Development Program were offered a diploma of further education in the Education Sciences.

During the periods 1997-2001 and 2002-2005 the Department of Primary Education successfully implemented the Program of Academic and Professional Upgrading of Primary Teachers in the four Prefectures of Epirus, the Prefecture of Aitoloakarnania, as well as the Prefectures of Corfu, Lefkada, Chania, Heraklion, Lasithi, Evritania and Phthiotida.

The personnel of the Department of Primary Education consists of the following members: 17 Academic Staff Members, six Senior Teaching Fellows, nine Laboratory Teaching Staff Members, two Technical Staff Members and three Administrative Staff Members. The Department of is constantly developing and this is a result of the scientific work of the Academic Staff, the research, development and educational programs which are carried out in the nine laboratories of the Department.

The Department was subject to evaluation in November 2013 which was done by the members of the Committee of External Evaluation. The External Evaluation Report was delivered by the Hellenic Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency.
